The Scientific Diving Program at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is the oldest and one of the largest research support programs of its kind in the United States. The program trains and supports the university's scientists, students, and technicians in the use of underwater techniques and technology necessary to safely. recognized by OSHA as the scientific diving standard setting organization. The University shall maintain organizational membership in and active communications with the AAUS. It is the University of Washington's responsibility to adhere to the AAUS Standards for Scientific Diving Certification and Operation of Scientific Diving Programs.

Scientific diver training at UMaine is typically scheduled in the Summer and Fall as SMSIntroduction to Research Diving. In certain circumstances, when scientific needs dictate, the DSO may work with prospective scientific divers to provide on-the-job or . Scientific Diving and Small Boat Safety. Scientific Diving at BU; Boaters and Float Plans; Snorkelers; Scientific Diving Safety Manual, Vol. 1; Scientific Diving Safety Manual, Vol. 2; Scientific Diving Safety Manual – Appendices.

Scientific Diving Defined Scientific divers use specialized expertise to study the underwater environment and utilize scuba or other diving equipment as a tool. The primary role of a scientific diver is that of an observer and data gatherer. Common activities include visual measurements and counts of living organisms, collection of biological or physical samples, underwater [ ]. This standard sets minimal standards for the establishment of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) recognized scientific diving programs, the organization for the conduct of these programs, and the basic regulations and procedures for safety in scientific diving operations.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is a founding member of the AAUS and remains an organizational member in. Scientific diving is the use of underwater diving techniques by scientists to perform work underwater in the direct pursuit of scientific knowledge.

The legal definition of scientific diving varies by jurisdiction. Scientific divers are normally qualified scientists first and divers second, who use diving equipment and techniques as their way to get to the location of their fieldwork.

In addition to basic SCUBA certification and first aid training, our divers must complete specialized diver training either through EPA's Diving Training Center or the NOAA Diving Program. EPA Diver Certification. EPA conducts periodic diver training courses at our Diving Training Center in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

Additionally, a Diving Safety Manual and a Diving Control Board are required by OSHA for any scientific diving operation. After obtaining this exemption, some of the scientific diving community formed the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), with the objective of standardizing scientific diver training, tracking incident statistics.
